Response to Apple's announcement

Apple announced this week that they’ve joined our fight to use technology to improve sleep.

There is a lot to be done. Indeed, workers on the “night shift” have nearly double the lifetime risk of cancer [1], and much of this is believed to be driven by exposure to bright light at the wrong times.

Apple’s involvement in fixing this problem is a big commitment and an important first step.

We’re proud that we are the original innovators and leaders in this area. In our continued work over the last seven years, we have learned how complicated people actually are. The next phase of f.lux is something we cannot wait to ship to the world.

Rather than suggest simple answers, our mission is to enable f.lux to advance the science, while providing customized solutions for each person. We intend to make f.lux better in every way than the app we designed back in 2009.

Today we call on Apple to allow us to release f.lux on iOS, to open up access to the features announced this week, and to support our goal of furthering research in sleep and chronobiology.

As we continue to innovate and improve upon our ideas, we remain hopeful that we will have the opportunity to offer our best, new work to everyone who wants it. We’ve learned that people’s lives, biology, and everyday routines are incredibly, wonderfully different, and these differences must be embraced. There is not one right answer for everyone, so we are committed to making software that’s ever more adaptive and responsive to each individual’s needs.

Thank you for the words of support. We hope you’ll join us in our quest to understand how screens and light affect sleep and in turn, human health.

With love,
Michael and Lorna

People asked for references for the cancer claims above, so here is a brief list.

Carved from a real chunk of salt, Himalayan Salt Lamps have been growing in popularity for good reason, they’re beautiful.

The natural shapes mean each lamp is unique, and their soft, warm, calming glow is good for before-bed mood lighting.

A pair would be perfect for nightstand lights.

We’ve long been familiar with the work of sleep psychologists Dr. Leon Lack and Dr. Helen Wright— inventors of Re-Timer , so we were very excited to meet Dr. Lack recently at the SLEEP 2015 Conference in Seattle. He told us about his work developing Re-Timer and we had the chance to talk about his research on how wavelengths of light affect sleep.

The Re-Timer team kindly sent us two pairs of glasses to try out at home.

What’s a Re-Timer?

Re-Timer is a lightweight, eyeglass-like frame that you wear over your eyes. Inside sits a row of LED lights with the right color and brightness to quickly set your circadian clock. Re-Timer has two brightness options, and the green light works well for older eyes too, without the glare or discomfort that an equally bright white or blue light would cause.

How you use your Re-Timer depends on what you want to do. Let’s say you want to wake up earlier. Maybe you’re travelling east, or maybe you want some time in the morning to do your own projects before heading to the office. That means seeing the right kind of bright light when you wake up, so you’d wear your Re-Timer first thing in the morning. The next day, your body will be ready to wake up a little earlier. You’ll keep wearing Re-Timer in the morning for 30 minutes to an hour, until you’ve reached your desired wakeup time.

The Re-Timer website offers a sleep timing calculator and a jet lag calculator, and there’s even a Re-Timer fitbit app for measuring your results. Simply answer a few questions about your current waking hours and your desired waking hour, and you get a customized timing schedule. Most people are able to shift their schedule in just a few days.

When you use a Re-Timer, you can walk around freely and do all your usual activities: cooking breakfast, or reading the news, or watching TV. Lorna found wearing Re-Timer to be perfectly comfortable while moving around the house or reading on a laptop or mobile phone. Michael liked using his laptop with it, but he discovered that the lights were positioned near where he normally views his phone. One note: it’s never to be used while driving, but you could definitely wear it on the train or plane. In fact, you would probably end up meeting everyone if you did.

Who should use Re-Timer

Re-Timer is a great tool for business travelers and frequent fliers. It would make a fantastic gift for someone who is often crossing time zones. If you have an important faraway trip planned, you can begin resetting your body several days before you leave so you’ll already be adjusted to local time and feeling ready to go when your flight lands.

By all the metrics we have, Re-Timer is likely the safest device of its kind on the market. Still, it isn’t recommended for kids under the age of 13, because their lenses don’t filter light the same way as adults. And people with photosensitivity conditions, eye disease or bipolar disorder should not use it unless directed by a doctor.

Re-timer is a great option if you are a night-owl in an early world, or you or someone you love wakes up a lot earlier than they want to. Shift workers can use it to help maintain a strong light-dark cycle. Re-Timer would be a good gift for a high school or college student who has too-early school start times, or a graduate who’s starting an early new job. It’s also an easy way to get bright morning light if you live in a place with short winter days.

How to purchase Re-Timer

You can purchase Re-Timer at the company’s website.

When size doesn't matter: A survey of our users

We know that big screens have a big impact on sleep. But what about smaller screens like smartphones?

Screen size, brightness, and distance from your eye all matter, just like color. So a small screen should look a lot dimmer to your body. But a lot of people, especially kids, like to use phones really close.

So we started our first informal survey to figure this out. And we got about 3,000 responses over two days. We ran the survey using the wonderful, free typeform.

We asked people about the screen they use before sleeping, how big it is, and how close they hold it. We found out that people hold small screens closer. A lot closer.

Light follows the “inverse-square law”, so if you hold your phone twice as far away, it will appear 75% less bright to your eyes. But our median phone user was holding their screen just 8 inches away.

Our analysis suggests that people use screens at a distance that normalizes both screen size and brightness. Our median phone or tablet user is achieving a 35 degree field of view for each device. With larger, fixed desktop displays, that number goes as high as 60 degrees. For comparison, a normal movie theater is a 54 degree field of view, and an IMAX theater is an average of 70 degrees (source: imax.com).

Considering the inverse-square law, that sounds bad enough on its own. But most 6-10” devices are about twice as bright (500 cd/m²) as the big desktop displays (250 cd/m²), so to a first approximation we can say users are cancelling out the beneficial effects of a smaller screen size by holding smaller screens closer.

We don’t really know if it’s the ergonomics of these displays (no keyboard, no desk) that makes people hold them closer, or if it’s just how people like it. But our results show that a lot of people may be getting just as much bright blue light from small screens as they do from large ones.

Please read our tips for using screens more safely at night, and hold those phones a little further away.

PNAS study: using iPad before bed has major impact on sleep

A study published today in PNAS shows that reading a backlit device before bed makes your sleep measurably worse than reading a paper book under dim light.

According to the study:

While people are using an iPad at night their body produces 55% less melatonin

After shutting off the lights (and the iPad), they took an extra 10 minutes to fall asleep

When they did fall asleep, they had less REM sleep during the night

The next morning, the iPad readers felt sleepier, and it took them “hours longer” to feel alert. The book readers quickly felt more alert immediately upon waking.

When it was time for bed the next night, the iPad readers’ circadian clocks were delayed by more than 90 minutes. Their bodies began to feel tired an hour and a half later than normal, because they were exposed to alerting light from the iPad the night before.

Each participant was tested with both the iPad and reading a book. Books on paper did not suppress melatonin or cause participants to feel groggy the next day.

The 5-day study was conducted by Anne-Marie Chang, Daniel Aeschbach, Jeanne F. Duffy, and Charles A. Czeisler at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital).

f.lux’s take

This study shows that the bright blue light from displays at night is impacting our sleep. If you stay up late reading a bright iPad until just before bedtime, your sleep will be negatively affected, and your body will expect to stay up later the next night (as much as 90 minutes later). You may have trouble winding down, feeling alert when you should be getting tired.

This level of melatonin suppression is quite large. Melatonin is known as the sleep hormone, and has many functions in the body related to sleep. It is also a strong anti-inflammatory known to suppress cancer cell growth.

Because the circadian shift of using an iPad at night is very large, only a few nights of staying up late reading might put your body several hours out of phase with your normal routine.

Using screens safely at night

Using screens at night adversely affects sleep, but there are some things you can do to help protect your eyes.

Click here to read about a new study, published in PNAS, that measures the sleep impact of reading an iPad before bed.

Adjusting your screen

Learn how to adjust your device’s brightness, and dim it as far as possible at night.

Use f.lux at 2300K or below to remove the alerting blue light from screens. If you prefer using f.lux at higher color temperature settings, you should dim your screen as well. Currently on iOS, we are only able to offer f.lux on jailbroken devices.

Most phones and tablets can invert colors, displaying white text on a black background. If you use a backlit device to read at night, learn how to change this setting. It’s a good way to reduce the light coming from your phone.

We do not recommend the use of software that claims to reduce blue light by adding a red overlay to your screen. This reduces contrast, and requires even more brightness for readability. Instead, dim as far as you can.

If you’re using a desktop or laptop, your screen is likely larger and more alerting than an iPad. If you can’t install f.lux or dim your screen, try to plan your computer time earlier in the day so you can spend a couple hours winding down before bed.

How close you hold your device affects brightness. A screen held 6 inches away exposes you to about 4 times more alerting light as one held 12 inches away - and that’s still too close.

Adjusting your habits

Surprisingly short exposures of bright light can have alerting effects, so avoid bright light for an hour or two before bed.

This also means: no peeking at your phone when you should be sleeping.

Set your circadian clock by seeing some natural light each day. Even sitting near a window or being outdoors on a cloudy day is usually brighter than daytime artificial lighting indoors.

Orange glasses can be used to block alerting light. However, “blue-blocking” coatings and lenses that look yellow are designed to block UV and this will not help with circadian timing. You’ll know it’s the right color if you put them on and say, “Wow, that’s too orange.”

Bright lighting in your house also alerts your body. Use dimmers if you have them, or turn off brighter lights before bed.

Dimming your lights actually helps twice, because it will make you more comfortable dimming your screen.

If you have kids: Children require more sleep and are significantly more sensitive to blue light than adults, so these effects may be significantly greater for younger eyes.

How f.lux modifies ICC profiles (and how to change it)

If you have a dual GPU mac, f.lux v34 will install a “f.lux profile” while it’s running, in order to avoid flashing as OS X switches between video cards. You can see this in System Preferences > Displays > Color. This new profile preserves everything in the system profile except the display table, and it reverts to the normal one when f.lux exits, and during the day.

Disabling the profile behavior on dual-GPU Macs

If you have a dual-GPU Mac and this behavior causes problems (i.e. you don’t want us to touch your profile), you can turn it off like this:

defaults write org.herf.Flux disableProfile 1

And then make sure to delete the “f.lux profile” from your Color settings.

To turn it back on again:

defaults delete org.herf.Flux disableProfile

Turning on the profile code for single-GPU macs

If you are experiencing flashing due to an app other than f.lux, it may in some cases help to enable this new behavior on single-GPU machines too. We’re wondering if flashing while running Parallels may be such a case, but we have not tested this as a fix yet.

To do that:

defaults write org.herf.Flux writeProfile 1

And then to turn things back to the default settings, you should delete the f.lux profile from your Color settings, and do this too:

defaults delete org.herf.Flux writeProfile

f.lux beta update fixes dual GPU Macbooks

We’ve posted a f.lux beta (v34) for OS X Yosemite.

You can download it here.

To install, you should quit your current f.lux version before running this one.

You can also try out our earlier beta instead.

Dual GPU fixes

Our beta for Yosemite is going well overall, except for people with Macbook Pros and dual GPUs (those are the biggest & most awesome Macbook Pros). What’s happening is that Yosemite is installing the system profile rather than the temporary f.lux profile when switching GPUs. So the screen flashes white every time you switch apps, and it looks pretty bad.

We thought, what if we could safely fixup the system profile and fix this bug? So we did that. It looks pretty simple, but there’s a lot going on to make it happen:

On machines running Yosemite with dual GPUs, f.lux will now turn on its “system profile” behavior automatically, and it does all the details to restore your original profile when you quit (or when it’s set to Daylight colors). It should notice changes to the profile, and it’s very careful to keep all the non-f.lux settings the same. Because changing the profile is expensive, this approach may in some cases be slower, but we hope not too much.

If this causes problems, you can turn it off like this:

defaults write org.herf.Flux disableProfile 1

Or to turn it back on:

defaults delete org.herf.Flux disableProfile

10.9.5 too

We’re hearing that 10.9.5 was also exhibiting this bug, so we’ve defaulted the new behavior on for that version too.

Also, fixes for more extreme latitudes

Along the way, we noticed that our calculations for more extreme latitudes are a ways off, so we redid all those calculations too. Now our sunrise and sunset times are quite a bit more accurate. If you notice any problems, please let us know.

This build has undergone preliminary testing, but we’re looking for help finding any last bugs before shipping it to everyone.

v32 fixes some bugs:

“Disable until morning” works even if your machine sleeps

Darkroom improvements: keeps the titlebar dark even with Dark Mode enabled. And, text quality should be better

Choosing a preset will exit darkroom, movie, disable mode now

v31 fixes some bugs and has some Yosemite-specific customizations:

Added a “Dark Mode” compatible icon

Added the ability to have f.lux turn on “Dark Mode” at sunset automatically

Fixed an issue that would cause the screen to flash repeatedly in Movie Mode and other places

Fixed some little bugs when sleeping late on weekends

Allowed more extreme latitudes

f.lux update: v3.8 for windows

Your f.lux beta is updating automatically.

3.8 Update

Fixing a few more bugs and trying to get location really right.

New stuff:
* Try to indicate more strongly if you haven’t set a location and are using our default one
* Provide a menu option to reset brightness if you have toggled it down accidentally
* Map search doesn’t search for dumb things like empty strings and zipcodes now

3.7 Update

We added an actual map in the location dialog, so you don’t have to go to a webpage to find your location anymore.

New stuff:

New locate UI with a Google Map in it

Lower CPU usage

Running f.lux from the start menu will popup a running copy

Color settings chosen from a menu now persist across launches

Darkroom is now hidden until you unlock your color settings

Made the f.lux taskbar icon stay visible (but you can hide it if you like)

3.6 Update

People have asked us for a way to dim desktop displays in addition to making them warmer, so we’ve added a simple way to do this to f.lux. For a few reasons (including power usage), it’s better to use your backlight if you have a laptop, but we made this work for everyone else who has a display that’s too bright. Also, you’ll see your color temperature warm up as you dim, on exactly the same curve an incandescent bulb uses. Try Alt-PgUp and Alt-PgDn to see. Also, Alt-End is now a hotkey to disable and enable f.lux quickly.

We’ve added a wider range of color settings for you to try out in the “Lighting at night” menu (we’ve left the slider the same range for now). But you can use the tray icon menu to see warmer colors.

Lots of behind-the-scenes changes, and some much better support for Philips Hue.

New features:

New dimming features accessible via keyboard (Alt-PageUp, Alt-PageDown)

New hotkey to disable/enable (Alt-End)

New “hamburger” menu to access the tray icon menu from within the app

New “spotlight” notifier UI to show you dimming/disable status

Overall large reduction in CPU usage

Added 2300k, 1900k, and 1200k menu items (not accessible via slider)

Uninstaller can revert expanded color settings, if you want to

Hue improvements: support for more than 3 lights and multiple Hue Bridges, and discovery via Philips’ web service, not just uPnP

3.5 Update

The f.lux tray icon now comes back when it goes away.

f.lux’s Safe Mode now turns off all background polling for color changes. Why?
People with an AMD Radeon have reported hiccups in games due to CCC.exe,
which is trying to update its user interface every time we make an API call.
With safe mode, we stop watching for changes other apps make to the color settings. When other apps disable
our color settings, they won’t be automatically restored until the next transition.
If you turn on safe mode, you may have to click on the f.lux icon every once in a while to restore colors.

3.4 Update

Fixed a bug where unlocking a wider color range was not showing up.

3.3 Update

We sorta messed up lots of the animation stuff last time. Interrupting a long fade should never
make your screen blue or anything like that. So we rewrote it again. See if you can break it (again) this time.
You should be able to turn all sorts of things on and off and have it all work smoothly.

Along the way, we were trying some new super-red modes we call “Ember” and “Darkroom”. These only work
if you’ve expanded your colors by dragging the night slider to the left and rebooting with the secret button to
expand your color range. The new modes are available via the tray icon.

There were a few other bugs, but it’s late so I don’t remember what they were.

f.lux has probably already updated while you were reading this.

Mike

3.2 Update

Fixed some bugs with fading

Cosmetic fixes

Your f.lux install should update automatically.

Thanks for trying our beta. We have a few new features (and we’re working on some more).

3.1 update

settings now persisting correctly

fixed website launching menu bug

fixed menu problem with setting lighting

enhanced Movie Mode to display more accurate blues and skintones.

3.0 new features

Support for color temperatures down to 2700K. Makes you restart your PC, so we can mess with the system a bit.

More options for disabling, including a movie mode and a way to disable until morning.

For calibrated monitors, f.lux will now load the profile correctly.

Some bugs fixed with Intel chipsets.

Better support for Windows 7+.

A “safe mode” for machines that have touchy graphics drivers.

Experimental features

These features might move around or change in the future, but here’s a list. Look in the “Experimental” menu to turn them on or off.

f.lux can control Philips lights, including the Hue and Color Kinetics intelliWhite. We run this scheme in our living room, but it might not be right for other rooms.

For laptops and other screens that dim their backlight, f.lux can get even warmer when your screen dims, whether manually or with automatic brightness.
